Balthus

Deze Poolse kunstenaar geboren in Parijs, bracht een groot deel van zijn jeugd door in Berlijn en Zwitserland, waar de dichter Rainer Maria Rilke hem onder de hoede nam in zowel Berlijn als ook Zwitserland. Van de connecties van Rilke profiteerde Balthus toen hij wederom in 1924 in Parijs ging wonen. Hij sloot zich niet bij een groep aan, maar stond desalniettemin bloot aan veel artistieke invloeden.

In Balthus vroege meesterwerk "De Straat"doen de kale gevels op de achtergrond denken aan Hoppers visie op het stadsleven, maar de figuren zijn gemoderniseerde versies van die uit Italiaanse Renaissance-fresco's. De man die zich, rechts in het beeld, aan een jong meisje vergrijpt, maakte oorspronkelijk een schunnig gebaar. De kunstenaar paste het echter aan op verzoek van de huidige eigenaar.

This Polish artist born in Paris, lived a big part of his live in Berlin and Switzerland, were he met the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who took care of him during his stay in Berlin and Switserland. Balthus used the connections of Rilke when he returned to Paris in 1924. In Paris he didn't join an artist group, but nevertheless he was strongly influenced by many artistic influences.

In Balthus earlier masterpiece "The Street", the shabby fronts of houses on the background remembers to Hoppers vision on city-live, but the persons are modernised versions of the Italian-Renaissance-freco's. In the original painting the man, at the right side of the picture, didn't abuse a young girl but he made a mean gesture. The painter adjust the painting at request of the present owner.
