Deze Duitse kunstenaar werd vooral beroemd met zijn opzettelijk omgekeerde beeden om zo zichzelf en de kijker te dwingen te kijken naar de puur abstracte aspecten van het compositie. Dit schilderij is enerzijds gebaseerd op tekenen naar model vanuit een studio, anderzijds is het gebaseerd op de meer traditionele zelf-portret studie. Het is het werk van een gepassioneerd, intuitief en ruimdenkend schilder. Het beeld lijkt er bijna in gehakt: de verf is geborsteld, gekrast, geschuurd en uitgesmeerd met vingers. Het resultaat is niet een mooi figuur, maar een jacht, zelf pijnlijker, een beeld van een mens alleen en naakt aan het eind van de 20e eeuw.

Behalve de figurative elementen, focuste Baselitz zich vooral op de problemen van het abstract schilderen. Dat is waarom hij zijn schilderen sinds 1969 ondersteboven schildert. Een object ondersteboven geschilderd is geschikt voor schilderen omdat het ongeschikt is als object.

This German painter became famous with his deliberately inverted images in order to compel himself-and the viewer-to focus on the purely abstract aspects of the composition. This painting is based on the studio practice of sketching from a live model as well as on the tradition of self-portraiture, is the work of a passionate, intuitive, and wildly inventive painter. The image seems almost hacked into being: paint is brushed, scratched, scraped, and smeared with the fingers. What results is not a pretty picture, but a haunting, even poignant, image of a human being alone and naked in the late twentieth century.

Besides the figurative subjects, Baselitz's attention is mainly focused on the problems in abstract painting. That is why he paints his motifs up side down since 1969. An object painted upside down is suitable for painting because it is unsuitable as an object.
