Marathon Feat hearty & arty

By JEREMY OLSHAN

The 20th mile of the New York City Marathon is known as "the wall,'1 and to Dutch artist Erik Van Loon, there's no better place to hang a canvas.

As 36,000 runners — including Van Loon — traverse the five boroughs on Sunday, a team of volunteers will raise his massive 28-by-20-foot painting next to the Bronx side of the Willis Avenue Bridge.

The self-portrait, titled "I Will Win," is not intended as trash talk to the elite runners but rather a testament to the personal victories achieved by the anonymous throngs who flow through the city streets, Van Loon said.To run a marathon is an amazing achievement," he said. "I just want to make something great  to reflect that. Something beautiful.

Van Loon, 34, an artist' from RotterŽdam, conceived of the project while looking at satellite photos of the city. "I wanted to make a work big enough that a satellite could see it," he said. "I chose the marathon because it is the only international sporting event that anyone can join."

It took eight months of training, three weeks of painting, and a bit of negotiating to complete the work, said Van Loon, who portrayed himself in the same star-filled outfit he will wear the day of the race.

The acrylic painting was cut into six pieces and then all 115 pounds of canvas were rolled in a blue tarp, which he has been lugging all over town.
